Artemis

Artemis – often just referred to as Arti - is a Hermann’s Tortoise, which is a type of Mediterranean tortoise. The name Artemis is a unisex name of Greek origin that means “the hunter” and is often associated with the Greek Goddess of the same name (twin to the God Apollo) and was chosen, not because of its meaning, but because it’s a Greek unisex name we liked, and Hermann’s Tortoises are difficult to sex as babies, so we needed a name before we could know if our tortoise was a girl or a boy. At first we thought we had a female tortoise, but later learned Artemis was in fact male. Artemis is a lot more active than you might think a tortoise would be, and loves to climb and dig. He also loves having his shell and head stroked. His favourite foods are green beans, cucumber, raisins, and fresh fruits – only the cucumber is something he gets regularly though, since the other things are foods that should only be given to a Hermann’s Tortoise occasionally.

Hatched: 6th September 2019.
